What is derby?
Roller Derby is the fastest thing on 8 wheels and is taking the world by storm!
Derby consists of 2 teams of 5 players: Each team has a Jammer (point scorer) a Pivot (pack director) and 3 Blockers. The Pivot and the Blockers from both teams form a pack through which the Jammers need to pass. Whilst skating around the track the pack tries to inhibit/assist the Jammers through. The first Jammer legally to get through the pack is deemed the Lead Jammer. She now has the power to call off the jam at any time. Upon the Jammers’ second pass through the pack, each Jammer will score a point for every opponent she passes. The Jam lasts 2 minutes (or until the Lead Jammer may strategically call it off). The game is separated into two 30 minutes halves and the team with the most points at the end is the winner! (Generally followed by much well-earned celebrations!)
It’s a fast-paced, action-packed race around the track with thrills and lots of spills!
