Training

We are not currently recuruiting new skaters, as we are training up our 2012 intake of Fresh Meat. Once they have completed training, we will start planning our next intake – this may not happen until 2013. In the meantime, please register your interest at info@brightonrockers.com and start practicing your skating now.

Fresh Meat- Are You Ready to Rock?
Roller derby is a intensive women’s contact sport on roller skates. Even learning the basic skills requires hard work and dedication. We can take on all levels of skill and fitness; you need to be 18+ to skate with us, but we welcome all shapes, ages, and sizes.
What is basic training?
All derby girls must first learn how to skate properly. This includes falling safely (something we do a lot of!), endurance, agility, hitting and defensive blocking, and the rules of the game. We’ve found that working as a group is the most effective way for players to progress. Our fresh meat programme is designed to help all skaters new to derby reach the necessary standard required to become a full-fledged member of the Brighton Rockers.

What gear do I need?
In order to train skaters must have:
* Quads
* Helmet
* Knee pads
* Elbow Pads
* Wrist Guards
* Gum Shield

We highly recommend only skating with proper pads. Injuries can happen so your best protection is good gear!

Where and when will we train?
We currently train on Monday and Thursday evenings. During the summer, we also skate outside on the seafront. Many of our Fresh Meat go to local roller discos to brush up their skate skills.

How much does it cost?
All team members pay monthly dues of 25 pounds. This expense is to cover practice space rental, promotions, team merchandise, first aid, team events, and continued expansion.
What will be expected of me?
We like to have fun, but we take derby seriously. first and foremost.  We train hard to promote physical fitness, comraderie and a genuine team spirit.
How do I get involved?
We are looking for team members, referees, non-skating officials, timekeepers, and anyone with a passion for the sport. Please get in touch with us at info@brightonrockers.com, we would love to hear from you!
